Did you notice I didn't send you a Neuroconnection at the beginning of September? If you caught my August Neuroconnection you got to read some reflections on heat, chronic illness, and how the summer in Texas zaps my mental, emotional, and physical energy. So - I've been slower to write my newsletter.

Instead of constantly apologizing for such things - I've decided to just allow my frequency of posting to not be committed to a rigid rule. My goal is once a month - but I will share with you at least every other month.

I had a client message me recently saying "life is lifing" when sharing they needed to reschedule. I have decided that has been the theme for the past few months (maybe years) for me and for many people I interact with. It's been hard out here yall! I have days where I'm feeling motivated and hopeful and then the next powerless and apathetic. My encouragement for right now: find your people and spend time with them and care for/advocate for people where you can.

THINGS IN MY LIFE SINCE WE LAST TALKED

NEUROTIP: "Self-Spotting"

Every heard of Brainspotting? It's one of my favorite therapies I do with my clients. Brainspotting is a gentle brain-body therapy that helps process stored trauma, stress and emotion through relational connection, focused mindfulness and eye positions.

Brainspotting uses the neuroscience of eye positioning to help bypass rational, language based, problem-solving parts of our brain and use the mid- and back-brain to process.

What is Self-Spotting?
When I facilitate Brainpotting for my clients in session, I help guide them to the fixed eye positions they'll be looking at as they process. But I teach all my new Brainspotting clients how to "Self-Spot" - find their own brainspot when they are at home. So let me give you some direction so you can try it out!

Getting Started:
In Brainspotting we can find eye positions that are "activating" - where we experience increasing emotions that are difficult for our body. Or "resourcing" - eye positions that help increase/expand the capacity of our brain and body. For Self-spotting, I always encourage clients to focus on more resource spots when they are doing this alone at home.


Consider a "resourcing" energy you want to expand. When is a time you know you have felt that? Picture that time. In the the present, just picturing this, what emotion are you experiencing? Where do you feel it the most in your body? How big is it?

While looking at eye level (not up or down), Turn your head/eyes to the left. What happens to that resourcing energy? Increase? Decrease? Give it a number if you want: 0 (no resource at all) - 5 (super strong resource). Now look to the middle - compare. Then the right - compare. Turn back to the location your felt your resource the strongest.


Stay on your horizontal position that you felt the strongest resource (left, middle, right). Now look up - compare. Back to middle/eye level - compare. Now down - compare. Where ever you feel the strongest resource, that's your resource spot!

Now your only job is to let your body be with this emotion and somatic experience and see where your mind takes you. What do you notice? Thoughts? Memories? Body sensations? Emotions? Whatever comes up - follow it. It's okay if difficult emotions come up. Your brain is showing you this for a reason. Follow it and come back to your resource energy and expand it when you are ready! Before finishing - see how big you can get your resource energy.

Rent prices in Waco are pretty intense compared to how much money we make. Plus a lot of us do a significant amount of work via video anyways. If you'd like to consider starting a private practice, moving to some in-person sessions, or just move away from having your own full-time office - I've got some space available!
